What do you know about Russian traditional craft painting – marvelous Khokhloma? We’re talking about those magnificent red-and-gold flower patterned plates, samovars, matryoshkas and other richly adorned decorative items that one usually sees in films about the Soviets and Russian tsars. Yes, golden, (how Russians endearingly call this craft) Khokhloma is known to the whole wide world. But how exactly did this beautiful art came to be?

Surely, flowers of such breathtakingly magical beauty couldn’t just bloom out of nowhere, right? There’s, of course, the boring dry-fact origin of this golden floral pattern, written in historical books and wiki-pages. But “underneath” this well-accepted fact there’s another one, which is so much more in-tune with the fairytale feel of Khokhloma. And it grew out of love, like all magical things usually do! Machine Embroidery Design Yellow duck in Khokhloma Style is a tribute to this whimsical legend, and that is why…

So, there how the legend of golden Khokloma goes… In a small village in Russian, a man fell deeply in love with a girl. He wanted to give her most exquisite gift to show her how precious she was for him. He decided upon making it himself, for only this way would it be telling enough. That’s why he searched far and low for an inspiration to finally find it in the nearest pond. Then, after having spent days working on his project, he carved a wooden plate. But this plate was not just a usual plate; it looked exactly like the duck, which nestled near that pond.

The girl was touched by the wonderful gift. It showed her that the man had heart of gold, which was sensitive enough to see grace in a simple duck. They married and had a large family. And the happy ending to this story became the beginning for Khokhloma art. Children of that craftsman carried on with his inspirational idea in their families too. They enriched the duck-plate of their father with elements of their own. Some added little spoons shaped like little ducklings, other enhanced it with floral ornamentation. You can still marvel at mother-duck with ducklings plate-sets in traditional Russian souvenir shops.
