RESIZE OF DESIGN

Changing the dimensions of a machine embroidery design is not the same as enlarging or reducing a picture. An embroidery file controls thousands of needle penetrations, their order, length, direction, density, underlay, tie stitches, trims and movement across fabric. When its size changes, all those relationships must still work as one system.

My name is Ludmila Konovalova. I am the machine embroidery designer behind Royal Present Embroidery. I create the editable source files, prepare the machine formats, test the published sizes and take responsibility for the way every design stitches. If you need a Royal Present design in another size, I can resize it professionally from the original working file instead of stretching an exported stitch file and hoping for the best.

Order Design Resizing — $5 per File

Professional machine embroidery design resizing with stitch recalculation

Professional resize service at a glance

  • current price: $5 per design file;
  • the design must be purchased from Royal Present Embroidery;
  • resizing is completed from the original editable source whenever technically possible;
  • you choose the required dimensions and machine format;
  • normal turnaround time: 2–3 working days;
  • not every complex design can be reduced or enlarged to every requested size without losing essential details.

What do you receive when you buy a machine embroidery design?

When you purchase a design from Royal Present Embroidery, you receive a licensed copy of the exported machine-readable files included in the product description. Depending on the product, these may include formats such as DST, PES, JEF, EXP, VP3, HUS, VIP, PEC, SEW or DAT. These are the files intended for transfer to embroidery machines or compatible software.

You do not purchase the editable production source file or ownership of the digitized design. The source file remains with Royal Present Embroidery. This is normal professional practice: the working file contains the construction used to generate the machine formats and is part of the designer’s intellectual property and production system.

The difference matters because an exported stitch file and a native source file do not contain the same information.

Machine-ready stitch file Editable source file
Primarily stores needle coordinates, color changes and machine commands. Stores editable shapes and embroidery objects used to generate stitches.
May not retain the original outlines, stitch types or full object properties. Retains object outlines, stitch types, density, underlay and other construction settings.
Simple scaling may only move existing stitch coordinates closer together or farther apart. Allows stitches to be regenerated from the edited objects and reviewed individually.
Software may try to reconstruct objects, but the result is an interpretation of exported stitches. Preserves the designer’s original object structure and digitizing decisions.

Wilcom’s professional documentation defines a machine or stitch file as a low-level format containing stitch coordinates and machine functions, and warns that such files are generally unsuitable for scaling when stitches are not regenerated. Hatch explains that a stitch file cannot retain all the objects used to digitize the design and recommends using the original EMB file for the greatest editing control. This is not a sales phrase; it is a technical distinction built into embroidery software.

What happens when an exported DST, PES or JEF file is resized?

The result depends on the software and the way the file is opened. There are two very different operations that users often call resizing.

1. Scaling the existing stitch coordinates

In the simplest form of scaling, the stitch count remains the same while the coordinates move. Make the design larger and the existing stitches move farther apart. Make it smaller and the same stitches are compressed into less space.

When a stitch file is enlarged without proper recalculation, you may see:

  • gaps between fill rows;
  • fabric showing through satin columns and filled areas;
  • insufficient underlay for the new size;
  • overly long stitches that snag or fail to cover curves cleanly;
  • outlines that no longer register with fills;
  • details that look thin, weak or unfinished.

When the same file is reduced without proper recalculation, the risks move in the opposite direction:

  • excessive density and stiffness;
  • many penetrations concentrated in one small area;
  • very short stitches that create thread buildup;
  • thread breaks, bird’s nests and needle breaks;
  • fabric perforation, especially on leather, faux leather or delicate material;
  • small openings and details closing completely;
  • distorted lettering, eyes, fingers, flower centers or narrow decorative lines.

2. Resizing with stitch processing or object reconstruction

Some embroidery programs can add or remove stitches, adjust density or reconstruct approximate objects from a machine file. That is more advanced than merely stretching coordinates, and it can work for moderate changes in suitable designs. It is still not identical to opening the original source.

BERNINA’s documentation states that software can interpret outlines, stitch types and spacing from machine data with some success, but also warns that recalculated stitching may differ from the original. Hatch recommends limiting stitch-only resizing to approximately 10% up or down because the file does not contain the original objects. Different software uses different algorithms, so a file that looks acceptable on screen may still require a real test stitch.

The practical conclusion is simple: automatic recalculation can be useful, but it cannot know every decision the original digitizer made about underlay, compensation, object order, intentional open areas, decorative stitch patterns or tiny details.

Why professional resizing begins with the original source

When I resize one of my own designs, I am not simply typing a new percentage. I return to the working file and inspect the design as embroidery technology.

Depending on the amount of change, I may need to review or rebuild:

  • stitch density so the fabric is covered without becoming stiff or overloaded;
  • stitch length so fills remain smooth and running stitches remain functional;
  • satin width so columns do not become too narrow to form or too wide to remain stable;
  • underlay so the new size has the correct foundation;
  • pull compensation so fills, borders and outlines still meet after the fabric moves;
  • short stitches and cornering so curves and points do not create hard, overstitched areas;
  • small details that may need to be simplified, widened, moved or redigitized;
  • object sequence, travel paths, tie stitches and trims so the design remains secure and efficient;
  • decorative fills and manual effects that should not be destroyed by automatic reconstruction.

This is why a professional resize can change the stitch count. A larger design may need more stitches to maintain coverage, while a smaller version may need fewer stitches and simplified details to avoid dangerous density. A correct result is not defined by preserving the old stitch count. It is defined by preserving the intended appearance and stitchability.

Why a design cannot always be resized to any dimensions

Embroidery has physical limits. Thread and needle have real thickness. A narrow satin column cannot be reduced indefinitely, tiny lettering cannot keep the same clarity at half the height, and several layers of fine detail cannot always be compressed into a 100x100 mm (4x4") embroidery field.

A request may require simplification or may be technically unreasonable when:

  • the new size is dramatically smaller than the published size;
  • the design contains a face, lettering, fine outlines or many tiny objects;
  • a wide satin column becomes unsafe when enlarged;
  • the requested hoop is smaller than the design’s essential composition;
  • the new proportions would distort the artwork;
  • the intended fabric cannot support the resulting stitch structure.

If a requested size cannot be produced without damaging the design, I will not pretend otherwise. A responsible answer may be to choose the nearest safe size, remove or simplify a detail, or select another design created for that hoop.

What you can safely edit in my editor

my editor by Wings Systems is a useful free program for viewing embroidery files, checking dimensions and stitch order, changing thread colors, converting supported formats and making limited stitch-level edits. The software can also adjust stitch-file density during resizing, but that does not turn an exported machine file back into my original source file.

A safer example of a simple edit is removing a separate, independent element without changing the size of the rest of the design. If a motif contains an optional star and you do not want the star:

  1. save an untouched backup of the purchased file;
  2. open a working copy in my editor;
  3. select all stitches belonging only to the star;
  4. delete that selected element;
  5. check that no required underlay, travel stitches or tie stitches belonging to another object were removed;
  6. save the result under a new filename in the format required by your machine;
  7. test-stitch the edited copy before using the final fabric.

This kind of deletion does not compress or stretch all the remaining stitches, so the original density and stitch lengths of the rest of the design remain unchanged. However, every edit still needs inspection. Do not redistribute, share or resell the original or modified digital file.

Why I do not guarantee files resized by the customer

Every size published in the Royal Present Embroidery catalog is prepared as a specific embroidery file and test-stitched before release. I know how that file was constructed and how the listed version should behave under suitable stitching conditions.

Once a customer changes its dimensions, density, sequence or stitch structure, it is no longer the same tested file. I cannot guarantee an altered version created by software I did not control, using settings I did not select.

Over many years, when a customer reports gaps, heavy buildup, broken needles or outlines that suddenly no longer match, my first question is whether the file was resized or otherwise modified after download. In practically every such case I investigate, the problem appears after an independent edit. That is not a reason to blame the embroiderer. It is a reason to explain clearly that machine-file editing has consequences which may not be visible in a screen preview.

I stand behind every stitch in the sizes I publish. If you need another size, let me rebuild it correctly from the information that existed before the design was exported.

How to order the $5 resize service

  1. Choose the Royal Present Embroidery design you want and add it to the cart.
  2. Add the Resize of Design service once for each design that needs modification. Two designs require two service units.
  3. In the order comments, provide the product name, SKU or direct product link.
  4. State the exact required design size as width × height in millimeters or inches. If only one dimension is critical, say which one.
  5. State the real embroidery field or hoop limit that the file must fit.
  6. State the required machine format, such as PES, DST, JEF, EXP or VP3.
  7. If relevant, tell us the fabric and project type, especially for knitwear, leather, towels or another technically demanding material.

Please check your measurements before ordering. The outer plastic hoop size is not always the same as the machine’s usable embroidery field. The resized file is normally supplied within 2–3 working days. The service covers a size modification of a Royal Present design; it does not automatically include splitting a design for multi-hooping or redesigning a complex composition.

Five dollars is usually less than the cost of replacing damaged fabric, stabilizer, thread or a broken needle. More importantly, professional resizing protects the appearance of the embroidery and saves the time and frustration of troubleshooting a file whose original settings have already been changed.

Frequently asked questions about embroidery design resizing

Can I resize a PES or DST embroidery file myself?

You can scale it in many programs, and some software can recalculate or adjust stitches. The result depends on how much the size changes, how the file is interpreted and how complex the design is. A moderate change may work; a significant change is safer from the original editable source and must be test-stitched.

Is the 10% resizing rule always safe?

No percentage is a universal guarantee. Hatch recommends approximately 10% up or down for stitch-only files, but delicate details, decorative fills, leather projects and dense overlaps may tolerate less. Other simple designs may tolerate more with suitable processing. Always evaluate the actual file and make a test stitch.

Why does the stitch count change after resizing?

Because correct resizing preserves functional density and stitch length rather than preserving the old number of stitches. Enlarging may require additional stitches; reducing may require stitches to be removed and small objects to be simplified.

Can any large design be reduced to fit a 4x4 hoop?

No. Fine details, lettering, faces, narrow columns and layered objects may become impossible to stitch clearly at 100x100 mm (4x4"). The design may need substantial simplification, or another design should be chosen.

Can you change only the width or height?

Normally a design is resized proportionally to prevent distortion. If your project requires a specific maximum width or height, provide that limit. Non-proportional reshaping is a different technical request and may not be suitable for the artwork.

Does resizing guarantee that the design fits my hoop?

Only when you provide the machine’s real usable embroidery field and request dimensions within that field. Hoop names such as 4x4, 5x7 or 6x10 are nominal descriptions; the actual sewing field can be slightly smaller.

Can I remove one object without resizing the whole design?

Often yes, if the object is independent and all its stitches can be selected safely. Free my editor software can be useful for this. Save a copy, inspect the remaining sequence and test-stitch the edited file.

Why should I test the professionally resized file?

Professional resizing controls the design structure, but the finished result also depends on fabric, stabilizer, hooping, needle, thread, tension and machine condition. Test on the same material combination before stitching an expensive or irreplaceable item.

Custom Embroidery Digitizing

Frequently Asked Questions (Help)

Q: What is digitizing?

Before any design can be embroidered on caps, clothing or accessories, it needs to be converted into a format that is accepted and readable by the embroidery machine used. The digitized file tells the embroidery machine where, how and which color to use while stitching. We provide that service.

Q: How much does it cost to estimate designs?

Price quotes and stitch estimates are free.

Q: How do I submit orders of my designs?

You will be required to upload your artwork (e-mail: royalpresentembroidery@gmail.com) and indicate size, colors, fabric application, machine format and your required turn-around time.

In order to digitize an artwork, you need to supply us with a good quality image. We prefer designs to be sent as vector files in formats CDR, CMX, EMF, WMF, AI, EPS. Bitmap files are also accepted (JPG, PNG, GIF or TIF).

Payment Methods

PayPal accepted. We will send you the invoice to pay after the order is confirmed by you.
