Bees are hardworking and selfless creatures who know no doubt and no fear. They live in highly organized society, where each one takes its place and performs the designated function. The bee hive may exist for decades and seem quite the same, while changing hundreds of generations of its inhabitants. No wonder that these amazing insects quite often act as a mascot or an emblem with plenty of symbolic meanings.

For the first time as the emblem of state power the bee appeared in Ancient Egypt, becoming the sign of the first pharaohs’ line more than 5 thousand years ago. Later, these creatures were often found in heraldry, including coats of arms of noble families.

One of the most famous is the ROYAL BEE of Napoleon. After the proclamation of the military genius the Emperor of France, among other things he was faced with the task of selecting symbols of the Imperial power and his dynasty. The coat of arms of Buonaparte, the Corsican family of minor aristocrats, was not well suited for such a role. Neither could Napoleon use the Royal Lily of the Bourbons. So he opted for the bee, which, by the way, turned upside down looks very similar to Fleur-de-Lis.

There is no certainty, why Bonaparte chose this insect. Likely, his decision was determined by the fact that bees were present in the heraldry of the ancient French kings from the lineage of the Merovingians. Here we can see a clear desire of the Emperor to demonstrate the legitimacy of his power. For Napoleon and the dynasty of Bonaparte the bee was a sign of immortality and resurrection.
