In Christian cultures ST. NICHOLAS THE WONDERWORKER is believed to be one of the main guardians of people. Saint Nicholas lived in the 4th century A.D. and became known as the wise Greek Bishop of Myra who dedicated his life to God and helping the needy. His kindness is best revealed in the legend of the penniless man with three daughters of marriageable age. The girls had no dowry and they could not count on a decent married life. Instead, the sad fate of old maids awaited them, that was a huge shame in those days.
After learning about the unfortunate family, Saint Nicholas decided to secretly help them. At nightfall he threw a purse filled with gold coins into the window of their house. Thus the eldest daughter got her dowry and was able to find a suitable husband. After that St. Nicholas gave the same gift to the middle daughter and then to the youngest. The last time the father of the girls managed to notice his benefactor, and recognized the generous Bishop. The life of Saint Nicholas is surrounded by legends that not only glorify his sympathetic and kind heart, but endow him with miraculous healing abilities and even call him the resurrector of the dead. For example, ones the ship, on which the young Nicholas was travelling, got in a terrible storm. All attempts of the team to cope with the raging nature were unsuccessful, and hope for salvation was tiny. Nicholas turned to God, and by his prayer the storm gradually subsided. However, the sailors could not rejoice in their rescue, because the strong wind made one of their comrades fall from height, and the poor guy died. Then Nicholas began to pray over the dead body, and the sailor miraculously resurrected, as if all the time he had just been asleep.
