Fragile lilies of the valley appear on shaded forest paths and glades in late April – early May and continue to bloom for nearly a month. They grow almost everywhere in temperate climates of the Northern hemisphere, not just in the wild but also in gardens and greenhouses of avid gardeners. Several new varieties of lilies of the valley have been brought, among which there are even pink.

Nevertheless, it is tiny white bells with their delicate aroma and extraordinary pure beauty that has long attracted people. There are many legends about these touching florets. The ancient Romans believed lilies of the valley appeared due to the goddess of the hunt Diana. One day the young woman was walking in the woods inhabited by the fauns and suddenly noticed that they began to chase her. Diana had to flee through overgrown forest paths, and the droplets of sweat, dripping from her graceful body to the ground, at the same moment turned into white LILIES OF THE VALLEY.

In ancient Rus’ these flowers were a symbol of unrequited love. Water Princess Volkhova fell in love with a young man Sadko, who often came to the river to play his gusli. But the heart of the hero belonged to another one, beautiful Lyubava. When Volkhova found out about it, she decided one last time to go ashore and listen to the songs of her beloved, and then to hide forever in the water world. On the shore she saw the lovers and began weeping, and her tears turned into gentle lilies of the valley.

English legend says that lilies of the valley, the flowers of innocence and purity, were first found on the spot where Saint Leonard had shed blood in battle with a terrible dragon. Leonard was a close associate of king Clovis, who became the first ruler of the Franks who converted to Christianity. In the main Christian tradition, the lilies of the valley are considered to be the tears the virgin Mary shed on the cross of the crucified Jesus.
Today the lovely plant is still appreciated by many people. For example, in Finland, it was selected as a national symbol and was even featured on one of the coins before the country entered the Eurozone.
