Traditionally on Resurrection Sunday we say “Christ is risen!”, share special treats and gifts. One of the essential attributes of the occasion is the colored eggs, shining with a rainbow of colors on the holiday table.
The custom to dye eggs for Easter originated a long time ago, and since then, women have found a lot of ways to do it. They use natural and artificial food dyes, sequins, ribbons, lace, and themed stickers, in short, everything that can be found. Chocolate eggs in colorful wrappers are popular too. In some countries, they completely replaced the usual, because kids love sweet treat a lot more. In the West children believe that the magic Easter Bunny, not a chicken, lays painted eggs. Long-eared prankster securely hides his treasure, so, if you find his multi-colored eggs, the next year will be extremely successful.
On Resurrection Sunday all the Christian people rejoice, and not just in the return of the Savior, but also in the triumph of life over death. So all Easter symbols in one way or another reflect this idea. The egg symbolizes the miraculous birth of a living being. After all, a downy chick appears from a seemingly inanimate object. Spring flowers contain the similar meaning – they celebrate the awakening of nature from its wintering and the beginning of a new life cycle.

Did you know that in different countries lilies of the valley are called differently? The Latin name of the plant, Lilium convallium, literally translates as “Lily of the valley”, in the same way the name of the flower sounds in modern Greek, Spanish and English. The Germans call it May bell, Bulgarians – the maiden tears. The people of Hungary say “the pearl flower”, and the French and the Italians call it milky. For centuries, these florets were associated with purity, tenderness, and all the noble feelings.
