What is a stabilizer in embroidery?

Several different stabilizers can be used in embroidery, each with its advantages. Tear-away stabilizers are meant to be removed after the embroidery is complete and are often used for delicate fabrics or projects with a lot of intricate detail. Cut-away stabilizers are similar, but as the name suggests, they are meant to be cut away rather than torn off. Fusible stabilizers are temporary stabilizers that are ironed on before embroidering and then peeled off after the project is complete. Water-soluble stabilizers are another type of temporary stabilizer, but as the name suggests, they dissolve in water rather than being peeled off.
