This free square quilt block machine embroidery design features four symmetrical acanthus leaf ornaments arranged around the center. The classical scrollwork creates a balanced decorative fragment suitable for pillows, cushions, napkins, quilt blocks and other home décor projects.

The design is embroidered in one color without color changes. Black thread creates a graphic monochrome effect, while cream, gold, silver, burgundy or tone-on-tone thread can adapt the ornament to classical or contemporary interiors.

A Square Acanthus Ornament for Home Décor

Acanthus leaves have been used in classical architecture, furniture, textiles and decorative art for centuries. In this design, four mirrored acanthus fragments form a square composition with open spaces between the scrolls.

The motif can be used as:

• a decorative fragment on a velvet cushion;

How to Embroider a Ready-Made Pillow Cover

A ready-made pillow cover can be embroidered if its zipper or opening provides safe access to the front panel. Remove the pillow insert and keep the back of the cover completely outside the stitching area.

1. Measure the visible front panel of the pillow cover.
2. Mark its horizontal and vertical centerlines.
3. Print the design template at 100% scale and verify the placement.
4. Hoop the stabilizer and position the pillow front over it if the finished cover cannot be hooped safely.
5. Secure the fabric with temporary adhesive and a machine basting box.
6. Roll and clip the remaining fabric away from the needle, presser foot and embroidery arm.
7. Check that the back of the cover has not folded underneath the embroidery area.
8. Complete a test embroidery on matching fabric before stitching the finished product.

Placement tip: do not calculate the center using only the zipper or outer seams. Ready-made cushion covers are not always perfectly symmetrical. Measure the visible front panel itself.

Machine Embroidery on Dense Linen

Dense linen is suitable for this ornamental design, but the fabric must remain flat and stable throughout embroidery. Do not stretch the linen while hooping it.

• Use a medium-weight cut-away stabilizer for permanent support.
• A firm tear-away stabilizer may be suitable for dense, stable and non-stretch linen after a successful test.
• Apply temporary adhesive to the stabilizer to prevent shifting.
• Use a sharp embroidery needle suitable for woven fabric.
• Add lightweight water-soluble topping if the linen has a coarse or strongly textured surface.
• Press the finished embroidery from the reverse side on a soft towel.

Machine Embroidery on Velvet

Do not hoop velvet directly if the hoop can crush the pile or leave permanent marks. Hoop the stabilizer, float the velvet over it and secure the fabric with temporary adhesive and a basting outline.

• Use a medium-weight cut-away stabilizer.
• Place water-soluble film over the velvet pile.
• Test temporary adhesive on a hidden piece of fabric.
• Keep pins and clips outside the embroidery area.
• Embroider at a moderate speed.
• Remove the topping carefully after embroidery.
• Do not press velvet directly from the front with a hot iron.

Velvet tip: a water-soluble topping keeps the satin stitches above the pile and preserves the shape of the acanthus leaves and scrolls.

How to Prevent Fabric Puckering

Depending on the selected size, the design contains 17399 to 24594 stitches. Correct stabilization is therefore important, especially when embroidering pillows, napkins or decorative panels.

• Use one of the supplied design sizes without resizing it.
• Select the stabilizer according to the fabric and stitch count.
• Do not stretch the fabric while hooping.
• Secure floated fabric with temporary adhesive and a basting box.
• Use the same fabric, stabilizer, thread and needle for the test embroidery.
• Do not remove permanent cut-away stabilizer from directly behind the design.

Thread Color Ideas

The complete ornament is embroidered in one thread color, making it easy to coordinate with different fabrics:

• black thread on white or natural linen;
• cream thread on beige or dark brown velvet;
• gold thread on black, burgundy or emerald fabric;
• silver thread on navy blue or charcoal fabric;
• white thread on deep blue or black linen;
• tone-on-tone thread for subtle relief embroidery.

If metallic thread is used, choose a suitable Metallic needle, reduce the embroidery speed and complete a test stitch before embroidering the finished pillow cover.
