The earliest recorded festivities in honour of a new year's arrival date back some 4,000 years to ancient Babylon. For the Babylonians, the first new moon following the vernal equinox—the day in late March with an equal amount of sunlight and darkness—heralded the start of a new year. The event was celebrated with a 12-day festival called Akitu, which featured processions, feasts, and religious rites. Similar ceremonies were held by other cultures worldwide, including the Egyptians, who celebrated the new year around the time of the summer solstice, and the Hindus, who observed it on the first day of spring. While different cultures continue to celebrate the new year on other dates, the most widely recognized date is January 1st, which has been used as a New Year's Day since 45 B.C.E. As we ring in another year, let us take a moment to reflect on all that we have accomplished and all that lies ahead.
