Hoop and Embroidery Field Requirements

Check the actual embroidery field, not only the hoop name. A 178.0 mm design leaves only 2.0 mm of total clearance in a 180 mm field, and a 219.0 mm design leaves only 1.0 mm in a 220 mm field. Some machines reserve a safety margin and may reject a file that technically matches the nominal hoop dimension.

Original Single-Color Chart

Both ornaments and all four sizes are programmed as single-color designs. The original technical charts identify the shade only as Amber; they do not provide a Madeira thread number. The label is preserved exactly, and no invented brand code is assigned to it.

The digital swatch is an on-screen approximation of amber gold, not a manufacturer-certified thread match. Select and order thread by its official product number and a physical shade card.

Exact Gold Thread Options

Madeira specifies a 65/9 to 75/11 needle for FS Metallic No. 40. Begin with the thread manufacturer’s recommendation, reduce the machine speed to approximately 500–600 stitches per minute and adjust upper tension only after a test stitch. A separate thread stand and a longer, unrestricted thread path can reduce twisting. Do not assume that every metallic thread requires the same needle size: the correct setup depends on the exact thread construction and the machine.

Exact Stabilizers for Each Fabric

Direct Gunold alternatives: use Gunold Filmoplast when a self-adhesive backing is required; Gunold Totally Stable 2085, a 2.5 oz medium cut-away, for knits and stretch fabrics; and Gunold Solvy 20 mil as a water-soluble topping on terry and velvet. These are specific product names, not generic stabilizer categories.

Print the placement template at 100% scale and mark both center axes on the item. On a towel, rotate the ornament 90 degrees so its 178–239 mm length runs across the smooth woven band and the crown sits at the visual center. Verify the rotated dimensions on the machine screen before loading the hoop.

Keep the embroidery away from a thick towel hem, seam allowance or bulky folded edge. If the two ornaments are used on paired items, maintain the same distance from the lower edge and the same crown height. Use the machine’s trace function before stitching; these files have little clearance in several nominal hoop sizes.

How to Embroider Metallic Gold Cleanly

1. Test the selected size on the same fabric, stabilizer and thread combination planned for the final item.
2. Hoop the fabric flat and secure without stretching it. Long narrow designs show even slight distortion.
3. Use the exact stabilizer system listed for the fabric, adding water-soluble topping only on pile or terry.
4. Install a fresh needle suitable for the exact metallic thread and follow the thread maker’s size recommendation.
5. Thread from a separate stand when possible and give metallic thread a smooth, unobstructed path to the machine.
6. Reduce speed and watch the first section. Adjust tension only if the test shows looping, shredding or excessive bobbin thread on the front.
7. After stitching, support the embroidery while removing tear-away backing; trim cut-away backing with rounded corners.

Are these multicolor designs?

No. Each ornament is programmed as one complete color block with zero color changes. The original chart calls the shade Amber but gives no Madeira number, so the exact branded gold options above are recommendations rather than claimed chart matches.

Do all sizes fit a 5x7 hoop?

No. Only the two 178.0 mm-high files fit a true 130x180 mm field, and the clearance is very tight. The remaining files require usable fields of at least 140x200, 140x220 or 160x240 mm.

Which stabilizers should I use for a terry towel?

Use Madeira Cotton Soft 60 tear-away under the towel and Madeira Avalon 20 micron water-soluble topping above the pile. The backing supports the long ornament; the topping prevents stitches from sinking between the terry loops.

Can I embroider the design with metallic thread?

Yes. Exact options include Gunold METY 40 No. 7007 Gold, Gunold METY 40 No. 7004 Dark Gold, Madeira FS Metallic No. 40 Gold 4 and Madeira FS Metallic No. 40 White Gold. Test the exact thread, needle, speed and tension before stitching the final textile.

Can the ornament be stitched across a towel band?

Yes. Rotate the file 90 degrees so the long axis runs across the smooth woven band. Check the rotated design against the machine’s actual embroidery field and use a printed centerline template for accurate placement.

Can I resize the files?

Choose the closest of the four supplied sizes whenever possible. Strong scaling can change stitch length, density, pull compensation and the shape of the narrow scrollwork. Professional resizing should recalculate the stitches rather than simply stretch the file.
