What the design depicts

This is not simply a generic beach shell. It is a stylized ammonite — the spiral fossil shell of an extinct marine mollusk. Curved outlines and short directional marks suggest its chambers without dense background fill or large satin areas. That gives the motif three useful identities: coastal embroidery, vintage line art and a natural-history design for geology or paleontology gifts.

Design sizes and hoop compatibility

Size 1 fits a 4x4 in hoop horizontally. Size 2 is 4.04 in (102.6 mm) wide, so it does not fit a true 4x4 embroidery field even though the excess is small. Sizes 2 and 3 fit a 4x6.69 in hoop after a 90-degree rotation. In a 5x7 in (130x180 mm) hoop, all three sizes may remain horizontal.

Madeira thread colors

The color squares are on-screen guides. Use a physical Madeira color card when an exact shade match is required. Cotton No. 30 is thicker than standard 40-weight rayon, so make a test stitch and check that the small center of the spiral remains open.

Embroider a balanced pair without a second file

An ammonite works particularly well as a pair on opposite table-runner ends, two pillow fronts or a coordinated set of napkins. Mirror the second copy horizontally in your machine or embroidery software. The two spirals can then face inward toward the center of the composition or outward toward the edges. The motif contains no lettering, so mirroring does not create a directional error.

Before hooping, print two templates at 100% scale and arrange them on the finished item. This immediately shows whether both shells sit at the same distance from the edges and whether their spiral direction looks intentional. Keep the embroidery files at their original size.

Keep the center spiral crisp

The most demanding area is the tight inner whorl, where several short lines sit close together. On smooth linen, start with a new 75/11 embroidery needle and moderate speed. For 30-weight cotton, an 80/12 needle and approximately 550–650 stitches per minute are practical starting points. Do not loosen the upper tension automatically; examine the back of a test stitchout and adjust only when you see looping, frequent breaks or excessive bobbin thread on the front.

A water-soluble topper is unnecessary on smooth linen, cotton, twill or canvas. Use it only on a lightly textured towel surface. For loose or open-weave linen, a lightweight fusible tear-away keeps the weave from shifting and helps the inner spiral stay round.

Projects beyond ordinary coastal décor

The ammonite can decorate a field-notebook cover, a pouch for small fossils, a geologist's gift bag, a collector's album or a textile panel inspired by a cabinet of curiosities. For a museum-label composition, leave clear space below the shell and add the word Ammonite with a separate font from your machine. Lettering and alphabet files are not included with this design.

If a finished canvas tote is difficult to hoop, embroider the ammonite on a separate rectangle of linen. Remove the stabilizer, pull a short fringe along the linen edges and topstitch the patch onto the bag. This avoids bulky seams inside the hoop and gives the final piece a deliberate archival or field-sample look.

Which included size fits a 4x4 hoop?
Only Size 1, measuring 3.67x2.98 in (93.3x75.6 mm), fits a true 4x4 in (100x100 mm) embroidery field.

Why does Size 2 not fit a 4x4 hoop?
Size 2 is 4.04 in (102.6 mm) wide. Rotating it does not solve the problem because that same measurement becomes its height. Use a 4x6.69 in hoop with a 90-degree rotation or a 5x7 in hoop horizontally.

Can the design be mirrored?
