Mini Bullfinch with Rowan Berries is a free machine embroidery design featuring a small winter bird, bright red berries and a delicate branching composition. The download includes two original sizes of the same motif.

The smaller file fits an 80x80 mm (3.15x3.15 ") embroidery field. Both sizes fit a 100x100 mm (3.94x3.94 ") embroidery field, commonly sold as a 4x4 inch hoop.

Madeira Classic Rayon No. 40 Color Chart

Both sizes use the same original palette: six Madeira colors arranged in seven programmed color blocks. The color squares are approximate screen representations. Use the Madeira number and a physical thread chart when selecting shades.

Original color-block sequence:
1290 → 1147 → 1365 → 1307 → 1292 → 1365 → 1072

Do not use automatic color sorting. Madeira 1365 appears twice, but the raspberry breast and light wing sections are embroidered between these two blocks. Combining the repeated color blocks may change the intended layering of the feather details.

Fabric, Stabilizer and Needle

• Linen and stable cotton: use one layer of medium-weight tear-away stabilizer and a 75/11 embroidery needle.
• Lightweight napkin fabric: use firmly secured tear-away stabilizer and do not stretch the fabric while hooping.
• Knitwear and sweatshirt fabric: use soft cutaway stabilizer that remains behind the embroidery after washing.
• Terry cloth, fleece and velvet: use supporting stabilizer underneath and a thin water-soluble topper on the surface.
• Canvas and bag fabric: use firm tear-away or medium-weight cutaway stabilizer.

A water-soluble topper is particularly helpful on textured fabrics. It prevents the small berries, narrow branches and feather details from sinking into loops or pile.

Embroidery Tips

1. Select the size that fits the actual embroidery field of your machine.
2. Use the smallest hoop that accommodates the file with a safe margin.
3. Hoop the fabric and stabilizer smoothly without stretching the material or distorting the grain.
4. Use the machine’s trace or design-boundary function before stitching.
5. Keep the original sequence of seven color blocks.
6. If your machine does not trim jump stitches automatically, remove long connections between separate berry clusters after embroidery.
7. Complete a test stitch using the same fabric, stabilizer, needle and thread planned for the finished item.

The composition is horizontal, with a total width of 77.9 or 94.2 mm. When positioning it, center the complete bird-and-branch composition rather than using only the bullfinch’s body as the visual center.

Yes. You may replace the thread colors, but keep all seven programmed color blocks in their original order. Do not merge the two separate Madeira 1365 blocks with automatic color sorting.

Can I embroider the bullfinch on a terry towel?

Yes. Use supporting stabilizer underneath and a thin water-soluble topper on the fabric surface so the berries, branches and feather details remain visible above the towel loops.
