Embroidery on Linen and Napkins

Fabric and preparation

For a napkin, choose stable cotton or linen in the 170–220 g/m² range. Pre-wash, dry and press it with the care method planned for the finished item, so shrinkage happens before embroidery.

Test the design on the same fabric first. On porous or open-weave linen, check that the small details and outline remain clear rather than sinking between the threads of the cloth.

Stabilizer

Start with one layer of medium tear-away stabilizer, 40–50 g/m². Suitable examples are Pellon 551 50 g/m², Sulky Tear-Easy 45 g/m² and Floriani Medium Tearaway 40 g/m².

If you use the fabric-weight rule of thumb, divide the fabric weight in g/m² by three to estimate total starting support. Treat it as a test starting point: this design’s own recommendation is one medium tear-away layer, and a loose linen may need more support than a compact cotton.

Needle, topping and puckering

Begin with a new 75/11 embroidery needle. On coarse or dense linen, test an 80/12. Smooth linen does not need a topping; on terry, velvet or another pile surface, place water-soluble film such as Madeira Avalon or Sulky Solvy on top so the details do not disappear into the pile.

Hoop the fabric and stabilizer flat, without stretching. If puckering appears, check hooping, backing and needle condition before increasing upper-thread tension.

Which size fits a 4x4 hoop?

Only the first size fits a 100x100 mm (4x4") hoop. The remaining three prepared sizes fit a 130x180 mm (5x7") hoop.

Can I embroider it on a linen napkin?

Yes. Use stable linen in the stated weight range, pre-wash it first and support it with the recommended tear-away stabilizer. Make a test stitch-out on the same linen before embroidering the finished napkin.

Why are there 24 thread changes?

The supplied chart has 15 Madeira Classic colours and 24 stops. Follow the order in the file, including any repeated colour number, so details stitch in the intended sequence.

Can I resize the design?

Use one of the four prepared sizes. Automatic resizing changes stitch density and stitch length, so a different exact size requires professional resizing.

How do I open the files?

Extract the ZIP archive on a computer, then select the format for your embroidery machine. Do not try to open the ZIP archive directly on the machine.
