How to Download and Make the Mask

1. Add this free design to the cart with paid designs totaling at least $3 and complete checkout. All files in the order will then become available for download.
2. Unzip the archive and select one size that fits the embroidery field of your machine. Do not resize the ITH file.
3. Hoop a fabric-like water-soluble stabilizer smoothly and prepare the outer fabric, lining, and fastening as shown in the PDF instructions.
4. Stitch the blocks in their original order. Do not use automatic color sorting because repeated thread numbers and stops are part of the ITH construction sequence.
5. Add the fabric layers, lining, and elastic only at the stages shown in the instructions. Keep loose elastic ends clear of the needle before running a construction line.
6. After the design is complete, remove the item from the stabilizer, dissolve the remaining water-soluble support as directed by its manufacturer, and check the fit before making the final fastening adjustment.

Madeira Classic Color Chart for All Three Sizes

All three original technical charts use the same palette: 8 Madeira Classic colors and 14 color changes. The numbers below are linked to specific parts of this mask. Do not combine repeated colors automatically because their positions in the sequence are part of the ITH construction.

The color squares are screen references only; use the Madeira number from the original chart as the primary reference. For Isacord, Sulky, Brother, and other brands, use the thread color converter to find the nearest match, then compare physical thread charts and make a test stitchout.

Fabric, Stabilizer and Fastening

Fabric: begin with smooth cotton poplin or another stable woven fabric weighing about 110–150 g/m² (3.2–4.4 oz/yd²) for the embroidered outer layer. Use soft, smooth cotton of a similar or slightly lighter weight for the lining against the face. Heavy twill combined with the filled embroidery can make the mask bulky and stiff.

Stabilizer: for a softer result, use a fabric-like water-soluble stabilizer such as Gunold Solvy Fabric W40B. Start with three layers as recommended for this mask, then remove the stabilizer completely according to the manufacturer’s directions. Tear-away stabilizer supports the stitching but generally leaves the finished mask firmer.

Fastening: soft round elastic about 3 mm (1/8") in diameter or flat elastic 4–6 mm (5/32–1/4") wide can reduce pressure on the ears when adjusted after fitting. Check the placement and attachment stage in the PDF before stitching the construction line.
