Fabric and Stabilizer Guide

For smooth woven cotton or linen weighing approximately 140–180 g/m², use a medium tear-away stabilizer of about 45–60 g/m². Hoop the fabric and stabilizer together without stretching the fabric.

For loosely woven linen, soft blends or fabrics that will be washed frequently, use a medium cut-away stabilizer of approximately 60–80 g/m². This keeps the detailed lantern and botanical elements properly supported after repeated laundering.

When embroidering on towels, velvet or another raised surface, place a thin water-soluble topper above the fabric. The topper prevents small stitches from sinking into the texture.

Can metallic thread be used for the gold lantern details?

Yes. Use metallic thread as an accent for the gold outlines, candlelight or decorative scrollwork. Install a Metallic 80/12 or 90/14 needle, allow the thread to unwind freely from a vertical spool pin or separate thread stand, and reduce the machine speed to approximately 400–500 stitches per minute.

If the metallic thread begins to fray or break, check that it is not rubbing against a damaged thread guide and slightly reduce the upper-thread tension. Do not spray silicone into the machine or tension assembly. A purpose-made thread lubricant may be applied sparingly to the thread only when permitted by the thread and machine manufacturers. What does a thread nest underneath the fabric usually mean?

A nest underneath the fabric usually indicates that the upper thread has not entered the tension path correctly. Stop the machine, remove the hoop without pulling the fabric, cut away the trapped threads, and rethread the upper path with the presser foot raised. Check that the thread passes through the take-up lever, that the bobbin is inserted in the correct direction, and that the needle is fully seated.

Which needle should be used on cotton or linen?

For smooth cotton and medium linen, begin with a sharp embroidery needle in size 75/11. Use 80/12 for heavier linen, canvas or projects stitched with metallic thread. Replace the needle if you hear repeated punching sounds, see thread damage or notice that the needle leaves unusually large holes.

How should the finished embroidery be pressed?

Place the finished piece face down on a thick white towel and press it from the reverse. Use a pressing cloth and moderate heat suitable for the fabric. This protects the raised satin details, bow and lantern outlines from being flattened by the iron.
