Compare the exact width and height of the selected file with the machine’s usable embroidery field, not with the outside dimensions of the plastic hoop. Load the file before hooping, check the template at 100% scale and run the machine’s trace function so the complete needle path remains inside the available field. ML-LM Monogram Embroidery Ideas
The intertwined M and L may be read as ML or LM, making this design suitable for a couple, family or shared surname. The open striped sections allow the fabric to show through, while the solid central letter and dark contour keep the initials distinct. Use contrasting threads when both letters must be immediately readable, or choose two shades of one color for a restrained tone-on-tone result.
For folded dinner napkins, fold the napkin exactly as it will be displayed before marking the center of the visible panel. The smaller sizes work well on napkins, handkerchiefs and shirt pockets. The largest size creates a stronger focal point on hand towels, cosmetic bags, pillow corners and personalized wedding linens.

The Madeira colors reproduce the supplied sample chart and may be changed. Keep the original three-block stitching order instead of combining the repeated 1176 blocks automatically: the return to the first color preserves the intended overlap between the intertwined letters and contour. For Sulky, Isacord, Brother and other brands, use the Royal Present thread converter to find the nearest available shade. A converted shade is an approximation, not an exact match.

Stabilizer Recommendations
Choose the stabilizer by fabric weight. A practical starting point is fabric weight in g/m² divided by 3. For cotton or table linen weighing 120–150 g/m², begin with a 40–50 g/m² tear-away stabilizer. For medium linen weighing 180–220 g/m², begin with approximately 60–75 g/m². The design contains only 3500–4400 stitches, so excessively heavy backing can make a napkin unnecessarily stiff.
Stable woven cotton, linen and cotton-linen blends. Madeira Cotton Soft 9436 or Sulky Tear-Easy is suitable when the available weight is close to the calculated range. Hoop the fabric and stabilizer together without stretching the grain or distorting the area where the open stitch lines will be placed.
Loosely woven linen. Apply lightweight fusible support to the wrong side before hooping, then add tear-away stabilizer. This prevents the narrow outlines and horizontal stitches from shifting between the fabric threads.
Finished napkins, pockets, bags and items that are difficult to hoop. Madeira Cotton Fix 9439 is a self-adhesive tear-away stabilizer on a paper backing. Hoop the stabilizer, expose the adhesive area and position the item without stretching it. Trace the complete monogram before stitching.
Terry towels and raised surfaces. Place Madeira Avalon Film or Sulky Solvy water-soluble topping over the fabric. It keeps the narrow contour and open horizontal stitch lines visible above the pile.

Useful Questions & Embroidery Tips
How do I calculate the stabilizer weight for this monogram?
Divide the fabric weight in g/m² by 3 and use the result as a starting point. A 135 g/m² cotton napkin needs about 45 g/m² tear-away; a 210 g/m² linen needs about 70 g/m². If the fabric is loosely woven, add lightweight fusible support to the wrong side rather than using one extremely heavy stabilizer.
Can I embroider the outline with gold or silver metallic thread?
Yes. Replace the Madeira Classic 1006 outline block with a machine-embroidery metallic thread such as Madeira FS Metallic 40 or Gunold METY 40. Keep the main striped letter in 40 wt rayon or polyester so the metallic thread is used only for the contour and does not overload the open construction.
How can I prevent gold or silver metallic thread from breaking?
Use a metallic needle with a polished enlarged eye, such as SCHMETZ Metallic 90/14 or Organ Metallic #90. Reduce the machine speed to approximately 400–500 stitches per minute, loosen the upper tension slightly, use a thread stand if the spool unwinds unevenly and keep ordinary embroidery bobbin thread below. Test the outline first; if the metallic coating still shreds, replace the needle and check that the thread is not catching on the spool edge or thread path.
Can I stitch this open monogram on a terry towel?
Yes, but place Madeira Avalon Film or Sulky Solvy water-soluble topping over the pile so the narrow outline and horizontal stitch lines remain visible. Support the back with tear-away for a firm low-pile towel or soft cut-away for a stretchy or loose towel, and use a fresh 75/11 or 80/12 embroidery needle.
Can I resize the file in my embroidery machine?
Use one of the three supplied sizes whenever possible. A machine file does not contain the complete original object structure, and automatic scaling can change the spacing of the open lines or move the outline away from the letter. Limit stitch-file resizing to a small adjustment, test it on matching fabric, or use the professional embroidery design resizing service when another exact size is required.
Placement tip
For a corner placement on a dinner napkin, begin with the monogram center approximately 2–2.5 inches (50–65 mm) from both finished edges. Fold the napkin exactly as it will be displayed, position the printed template at 100% scale and adjust the mark so the complete monogram remains visible instead of disappearing inside the fold.
