Pumpkins Machine Embroidery Design features a harvest arrangement of four pumpkins and ornamental gourds surrounded by curling vines and textured autumn leaves. Golden yellow, copper orange, pumpkin red, fern green and creamy highlights create a natural botanical composition for Thanksgiving table linens, fall kitchen decor and rustic seasonal projects.

Fall and Thanksgiving embroidery projects

This is a substantial composition rather than a small pumpkin accent. Its vertical proportions make it particularly effective where the embroidery should become the central feature of the finished textile.

  • Thanksgiving table runner: embroider one motif near each end, turned in opposite directions toward the centre of the table.
  • Placemat: position the pumpkins in the lower outer corner so plates and cutlery do not cover the embroidery.
  • Decorative pillow: centre the design on an oatmeal linen, cotton canvas or velvet front panel before assembling the cover.
  • Kitchen or tea towel: place the motif above the lower decorative border on a stable woven towel.
  • Fall wall hanging: combine the embroidery with natural linen, wooden dowels and simple brown or olive binding.
  • Tote bag: use canvas or firm twill and position the motif below the handles where it will remain visible.

How the embroidered texture is created

The pumpkins are not covered with one flat block of fill stitches. Long, slightly irregular layers follow the natural ribs and curves of each fruit. Cream highlights interrupt the denser orange, yellow and green areas, allowing small portions of the fabric and underlying stitches to remain visible. This creates the appearance of hand-guided long stitch and gives the pumpkins a lighter, more painterly surface.

Madeira Classic 40 viscose rayon is especially effective here because the fibres reflect light differently when the stitch direction changes. The central pumpkin, the yellow pumpkin and the dark green gourd therefore appear rounded without foam or additional padding.

Madeira Classic 40 color chart

The embroidery sequence contains 11 thread colors and 10 color changes. The thread numbers below are taken from the original color chart.

Color Madeira Classic 40 Sequence Embroidered segments
1140 Avocado Green 1 Dark foundation and shadow sections throughout the autumn leaves.
1150 Chartreuse 2 Light leaf sections, veins, curling vines and fresh botanical highlights.
1065 Copper 3 Main foundation and warm midtones of the large central pumpkin.
1172 Egg Yolk Yellow 4 Golden ribs on the orange pumpkins and foundation of the lower golden pumpkin.
1124 Gold Rush Yellow 5 Bright golden layers and dimensional ribs on the smaller yellow pumpkins.
1155 Marmalade 6 Soft orange foundation of the elongated striped gourd.
1078 Pumpkin Orange 7 Strong orange ribs and contour accents on the elongated gourd.
1170 Fern Green 8 Foundation and dark curved body of the front green gourd.
1193 Peridot Yellow Green 9 Lighter ribs and highlights following the curve of the green gourd.
1191 Gold Coin 10 Pumpkin stems, small shadow details and warm brown-green accents.
1072 Coconut Cream 11 Final cream reflections across the pumpkins and gourds.

Choosing fabric and stabilizer

Because the design contains more than 30,000 stitches across a large area, thin fabric without proper backing can draw inward between the pumpkin sections. Stable linen, cotton canvas, twill and firmly woven decorator fabric provide the most reliable results.

Fabric or project Recommended stabilizer Weight Removal
Firm linen, cotton canvas or twill Madeira Cotton Soft tear-away 50 g/m² (1.47 oz/yd²) Tears cleanly around the completed embroidery.
Table linen or lighter woven cotton Madeira Cotton Stable fusible tear-away 50 g/m² (1.47 oz/yd²) Fuse before hooping and tear away after stitching.
Finished towel or difficult-to-hoop panel Madeira Cotton Fix self-adhesive tear-away 50 g/m² (1.47 oz/yd²) Hoop the stabilizer and float the textile on its adhesive surface.
Loose linen, pillow fabric or frequently washed bag Madeira Super Strong cut-away 80 g/m² (2.36 oz/yd²) Trim the stabilizer approximately 6–8 mm from the embroidery.

For loose linen or a soft pillow panel, one layer of 80 g/m² cut-away is usually safer than stacking several thin tear-away sheets. Tear-away can separate between dense sections during stitching, while cut-away continues supporting the long pumpkin ribs after washing.

Embroidery settings and practical tips

  1. Prewash linen, cotton and kitchen textiles before marking the centre of the design.
  2. Hoop the fabric and stabilizer firmly, keeping the grain straight. Do not stretch the fabric to make it feel tighter.
  3. Use a 75/11 embroidery needle for linen and medium cotton. Use an 80/12 needle for dense canvas or heavier twill.
  4. Embroider Madeira Classic 40 rayon at approximately 550–700 stitches per minute.
  5. Check the first leaf sequences before the machine begins the large pumpkin fills. If the fabric starts drawing inward, stop and correct the stabilization immediately.
  6. For waffle or terry towels, place a lightweight water-soluble film on top so the leaf veins and cream highlights do not sink into the texture.
  7. Press the finished embroidery from the reverse side on a padded surface. Pressing directly on the front can flatten the long stitches and reduce their shine.

Frequently asked questions

Does this design fit a 5x7 hoop?

Yes. The design measures 128.0x169.0 mm (5.04x6.65 ") and is intended for a 130x180 mm (5x7") hoop or a larger hoop.

Is this mainly a Halloween design?

No. The pumpkins are natural harvest pumpkins and gourds without faces, lettering or frightening elements. The composition works for fall decorating, Thanksgiving table linens, harvest gifts and farmhouse kitchen textiles.

Can it be embroidered on a thin dinner napkin?

The design is relatively large and contains 30383 stitches, so a thin napkin may feel too heavy or become distorted. Firm linen placemats, table runners and medium-weight napkins are better choices.

Should temporary spray adhesive replace stabilizer?

No. Temporary adhesive only helps keep layers from shifting. It does not provide the structural support required by this design. Spray lightly onto the stabilizer away from the machine and allow it to become tacky before attaching the fabric.
