Vintage Red Christmas Truck with Tree is a multicolor machine embroidery design in the style of a classic Christmas postcard. An evergreen tree is secured with a strap in the bed of an old pickup; layered color fills, shadows, light highlights and final sketch-like outlines define the truck body, wheels, windows and branches.
Use it on decorative pillows, sturdy kitchen towels, quilts, wall hangings, fabric gift bags, covers, throws and large stocking blanks. This is neither appliqué nor an in-the-hoop project: no fabric is placed inside the motif, and the entire image is built with machine stitches.
This purchase contains digital files for an embroidery machine. A finished towel, pillow, fabric, thread and other physical materials are not included.

Madeira Classic Rayon 40 color map
The design is programmed with 12 unique colors and 16 color blocks. Four shades return after other layers. Each Madeira number therefore appears only once in this table, while the last column combines every part stitched with that shade.

The swatches are approximate screen colors. Use a physical Madeira thread chart for final matching. The numbers and names follow the official Madeira Classic Rayon 40 color chart.
How the stitch order is built
- The first three colors build the tree: dark foliage, trunk and the main green branches.
- The machine then stitches the windshield, gray and dark wheel details, main body fills, shadows and light highlights.
- The next-to-last dark block adds the truck outlines and sketch-like shading.
- The final deep-pink block places the securing strap over the completed tree and body, so it must remain at the end.
Do not merge repeated thread numbers into one early block. The later returns to 1040, 1379, 1004 and 1081 are programmed after other colors to preserve the intended layer overlap.

Red Christmas Truck with Appliqué – 4 Sizes This large multicolor design needs support until the last black outline and final tree strap are complete. Removing or cutting the backing early can let the later details shift away from the underlying fills.
Thread, needle and machine speed
- Top thread: Madeira Classic Rayon 40 or another quality 40-weight machine embroidery thread.
- Firm cotton and linen: a new 75/11 embroidery needle.
- Denim, canvas and layered blanks: an 80/12 embroidery needle.
- Knit fabric: a 75/11 embroidery ballpoint needle; do not stretch the fabric while hooping.
- Working speed: 600–700 stitches per minute on stable woven fabric; 500–600 on thick layered projects or high-pile fabric.
Reducing speed is especially useful during the final sketch outlines. Several stitch layers have already accumulated by that stage, so rapid frame movement makes weak stabilization more visible.
Practical tips for this Christmas truck
- Set out 12 spools before starting. The machine makes 15 thread changes, but four shades return later. Keep 1040, 1379, 1004 and 1081 beside the machine after their first stop.
- Check registration after the main pink fills. If the fabric is already rippling, later dark outlines will make the offset more obvious. Stop and check fabric and stabilizer tension before continuing.
- Always cover pile from above. Without Avalon Film, narrow black strokes, white highlights and evergreen needles can sink into terry loops or fleece.
- Embroider before cutting the final project pieces. For a stocking, pillow or bag, stitch the truck on a flat blank first, then square, cut and assemble the item.
- Do not replace every gray and black with one shade. 1040, 1362, 1000 and 1006 create separate levels for the wheels, metal, shadows and outlines; one dark thread makes the truck look flat.
- For a different truck color, replace only the red family. Substitute 1107, 1379 and 1081 with three related blues, greens or warm neutrals while preserving a light, medium and dark value.

Frequently asked questions
Which file fits a 5 × 7 inch hoop?
Only the 128.4 × 152.7 mm / 5.06 × 6.01 in version fits the nominal 130 × 180 mm / 5 × 7 in embroidery area. The other files require one of the larger hoops shown in the table.
Why are there 12 colors but 15 thread changes?
The starting thread plus 15 changes create 16 color blocks. Four numbers — 1040, 1379, 1004 and 1081 — return after other layers, so you need 12 spools even though the machine stops more often.
Can I merge identical thread numbers to reduce color changes?
No. The repeated blocks occur later because they stitch over completed fills. Moving them forward changes the overlap, outlines and appearance of the strap across the tree.
Why does the DST file not display Madeira numbers?
DST reliably carries stitches and color-change commands, but it does not preserve a full brand-specific thread palette in the same way as newer formats. Thread the machine from the color map on this page while keeping the programmed block order.
Can I stitch the entire truck in one color?
The machine can run all stops with one thread, but stitch density and order will remain unchanged while the tree, body, wheels, metal and outlines lose their visual separation. For a simplified result, retain at least green, brown, the red family, light gray and black.
Can I embroider it on a terry kitchen towel?
Yes, if the towel is large enough for the selected hoop. Use backing appropriate for the base fabric and Madeira Avalon Film 20 µm / 0.8 mil on top; otherwise evergreen needles, white highlights and fine black shading can sink into the loops.
Why is the black outline shifting away from the red fill?
The usual cause is fabric movement during a long multicolor stitch-out: insufficient backing, fabric stretched in the hoop or excessive machine speed. Use the stabilizer listed for the fabric, hoop without stretching and slow the machine during the final outlines.
Is this an appliqué design or an in-the-hoop stocking?
No. Every colored area of the truck and tree is stitched with thread. The files contain no placement line for appliqué fabric, stocking assembly seam or opening for turning.
