Fabric, stabilizer and machine setup

  • Woven linen or cotton: attach a tear-away stabilizer firmly to the wrong side, then hoop the stabilizer and fabric together. The surface should be flat and drum-taut, but the fabric must not be stretched out of shape.
  • Slightly stretchy fabric: use a self-adhesive tear-away such as Madeira Cotton Fix. Remove the release paper, smooth the fabric onto the adhesive from the center outward without stretching it, and hoop both layers together.
  • Loose-weave linen: two lighter stabilizer layers placed with their grain in different directions can control a long design better than one excessively stiff layer.
  • Terry cloth: place tear-away backing underneath and water-soluble film on top so small stitches stay above the pile.
  • Needle and speed: start with a fresh 75/11 embroidery needle on woven linen or cotton and approximately 500–650 stitches per minute. Slow down if the fabric begins to shift or pucker.

Practical embroidery FAQ

How do I hoop linen or cotton so the long border stays aligned?

Apply a light mist of temporary embroidery adhesive to the stabilizer away from the machine, position it on the wrong side of the fabric, and hoop the stabilizer and fabric together. Tighten the hoop until the surface is flat and drum-taut, but do not pull or stretch the fabric after hooping.

What should I use if the fabric stretches slightly?

Use a self-adhesive tear-away stabilizer such as Madeira Cotton Fix. Peel off the release paper, lower the fabric onto the sticky surface without stretching it, smooth from the center outward, and hoop the stabilizer and fabric together as one flat sandwich.

Can temporary spray adhesive make my embroidery machine sticky?

Overspray can settle on nearby surfaces if the adhesive is sprayed beside the machine. Put the stabilizer inside a large cardboard box, spray a light even mist there, and then carry it to the hooping area. Never spray toward the machine, hoop, needle or bobbin area; follow the distance on the can and let the adhesive partially dry before positioning the fabric.

How can I keep the outlines aligned with the flower fills?

Prevent movement before stitching: secure both fabric and stabilizer in the hoop, use a fresh 75/11 embroidery needle, and begin around 500–650 stitches per minute. If the outline shift becomes greater along the length of the border, stop and check for hoop slippage or fabric stretch rather than moving the design in the machine.

How do I embroider this border on a terry towel without losing small details?

Use tear-away stabilizer under the towel and a water-soluble film on top. Hoop the layers without stretching the towel, keep the film flat over the pile, and remove the topping only after the embroidery is complete so the small stitches remain above the loops.
