Design facts

Madeira Classic 40 thread color chart

The original RPE-862 sequence contains 8 color blocks and 7 thread changes. Madeira Classic 40 No. 1083 is used in blocks 1 and 6. Preserve the block order even when embroidering the design in one color: the digitizing sequence controls overlaps and the direction in which adjacent filled areas are built.

The squares are approximate screen samples only. Monitor settings, light and dye lots change how thread appears. Select a spool by its Madeira number and compare it with a physical thread chart. No separate current English marketing name could be verified for the legacy shade 1347, so the table uses an honest descriptive label instead of presenting an invented official name.

How to keep the square block aligned

1. Prewash before cutting. When two fabrics will be combined in patchwork, prewash and press both so that later shrinkage does not distort the embroidered squares differently.
2. Embroider first and cut the block afterwards. Mark the center and axes on a larger piece of fabric, hoop it with stabilizer, complete the embroidery and then square the fabric around the finished motif.
3. Use a sharp 75/11 needle and No. 40 embroidery thread on stable quilting cotton or linen. Begin at approximately 550–700 stitches per minute and reduce speed if the hoop vibrates or registration starts to move.
4. Match the backing to the fabric. A firm woven cotton can begin with a 50–60 g/m² (1.5–1.8 oz/yd²) tear-away. Soft linen, loosely woven fabric and blocks that will be handled repeatedly are safer with a soft 40–60 g/m² (1.2–1.8 oz/yd²) cut-away. A practical starting estimate for one layer is fabric weight ÷ 3: 180 g/m² (5.3 oz/yd²) fabric suggests about 60 g/m² (1.8 oz/yd²) stabilizer.
5. Do not stretch the fabric in the hoop. It should lie flat and secure. Fabric stretched like a drum contracts after unhooping and can pull the finished embroidery out of square.
6. Test the selected size. A sample confirms that the fabric supports the stitch count and that the outer leaves remain aligned after all 8 color blocks.

Multicolor and monochrome versions

The original olive, yellow and antique-bronze palette separates the acanthus leaves, scrolls and central rosette. For a quieter classic interior, recolor the blocks in related shades such as cream, champagne, beige and bronze. For tone-on-tone embroidery, leave the same spool in the machine through all 8 blocks, but do not merge or reorder them. The acanthus structure will remain visible through stitch direction and the luster of the thread.
