For a stable non-stretch fabric, a useful starting point is a stabilizer weighing approximately one-third of the fabric weight. This is only a starting rule: loosely woven linen may require permanent cut-away support even when the fabric itself is relatively heavy.
How to embroider the Roman gnome on linen
- Prewash and press natural linen before cutting because it may shrink during the first wash.
- Hoop the fabric together with the stabilizer. The linen should lie flat without being stretched.
- Use a 75/11 or 80/12 embroidery needle for medium-weight linen. Heavy bag canvas may require a 90/14 needle.
- Use size 40 rayon or polyester embroidery thread and size 60 embroidery bobbin thread.
- Begin at approximately 600–700 stitches per minute. Reduce the speed to 500–600 stitches per minute for the shield, helmet and final black outlines.
- Remove the project from the machine before trimming or tearing away the stabilizer.
If temporary spray adhesive is required, apply a light layer of Odif 505 or Madeira MSA 1100 to the stabilizer away from the embroidery machine. Do not spray adhesive onto the hoop, needle plate or inside the machine.
Embroidery quality checks
- Make a complete test stitch on the same fabric and stabilizer planned for the finished project.
- Check the alignment of the red shield field, gold border and final black outline.
- If the final outline shifts, check the hooping and stabilization before changing the thread tension.
- Do not skip the second Madeira Classic 1071 stop. It adds light-colored details after the face and beard have been stitched.
- Use polyester size 40 thread for towels, aprons and travel accessories that will be washed frequently.
- Use one of the supplied sizes whenever possible. Automatic resizing may change the fill density and alignment of the helmet, shield and armor details.
Is this a Roman gladiator or a Roman soldier?
The character is more accurately described as a Roman soldier or Roman legionary because he wears military-style armor and carries a shield. Roman gladiator gnome remains a useful search phrase, but Roman Soldier Gnome is the clearer product name for this artwork.
