Stabilizers for different materials

A useful starting point for stable, non-stretch fabric is to choose a stabilizer weighing approximately one-third of the fabric weight. Loosely woven linen and soft bag fabrics may require stronger support even when their actual fabric weight is relatively high.

Thread color chart and embroidery sequence

The design uses 13 unique Madeira Classic 40 colors in 14 embroidery steps with 13 thread changes. Color 1071 appears at two different stages. Do not combine the repeated color stops because other design elements are embroidered between them.

Important: thread colors displayed on a monitor are approximate. Use the Madeira thread numbers and a physical thread chart when exact color matching is required.

How to embroider the design

1. Prewash and press the fabric if it may shrink.
2. Mark the vertical and horizontal centerlines of the embroidery placement.
3. Combine the fabric with the appropriate stabilizer and hoop both layers without stretching the material.
4. Check that seams, zippers, pockets and lining remain outside the embroidery area and hoop movement path.
5. Use a 75/11 embroidery needle for regular cotton and an 80/12 embroidery needle for dense linen, canvas or denim.
6. Embroider at approximately 600–700 stitches per minute.
7. Reduce the speed to approximately 500–600 stitches per minute for the final black outlines. This helps maintain registration around the striped shirt, mustache and hat.
8. Remove the stabilizer carefully and press the finished embroidery from the wrong side over a soft towel.

Practical machine embroidery tips

• The narrow parallel stripes make fabric movement especially visible. Correct stabilization is essential for clean alignment between the blue, ivory and black sections.
• Do not substantially resize the finished machine file in the embroidery machine unless the software recalculates stitch density and underlay.
• Madeira Classic 40 rayon provides a glossy finish for decorative cushions, framed artwork and display pieces.
• Polyester embroidery thread #40 is more practical for bags, aprons, towels and frequently washed projects.
• Apply temporary spray adhesive only to the stabilizer and away from the embroidery machine. Do not spray near the hook, needle bar or electronic sensors.
• Always test the design on the same fabric with the same thread, needle and stabilizer intended for the final project.
