Vintage Key with Amethyst is a two-size digital machine embroidery set. The key has a round openwork bow of symmetrical scrolls, a long shaft, and a shaped bit. A rectangular amethyst accent sits below the bow and separates it from the shaft.

The small version suits a napkin, pocket, cuff, or narrow insert. The large key becomes a vertical focal point on a bag flap, jacket panel, towel, or framed textile piece. This listing provides embroidery-machine files, not a finished item.

Placement ideas

The vertical silhouette is easy to align on the centre axis of a project. Place it near the narrow end of a napkin, above a towel border, or in the centre of a bag flap before that panel is sewn. Openwork scrolls and the amethyst accent read best on a quiet, solid-colour ground. Print the selected version at 100% before marking and transfer the bow centre, not just the key’s top edge.

Questions and answers

How should I stabilize this key on a linen napkin or tea towel that will be washed often?

Prewash or preshrink the fabric first. The key has a dense bow with openwork scrolls, so use a medium cutaway backing of about 2.5 oz/yd², approximately 85 g/m², such as Madeira E-Zee Cut, for a working napkin or tea towel. Hoop the fabric and backing together without stretching, then trim the backing after stitching, leaving about 1/2 in (12 mm). Fabric weight in g/m² ÷ 3 is a starting estimate only: for example, 180 g/m² ÷ 3 is 60 g/m², about 1.8 oz/yd². Do not downgrade the backing for this dense motif on a washable item just because that estimate is lower. Tear-away is appropriate only for a light, simple design when an almost clean back is essential.

Can I stitch this key on burlap or loosely woven linen?

Use only a fine, closely woven version. On coarse burlap with large holes, the openwork bow will sink between the yarns, and no backing can fully correct that. Use Madeira E-Zee Cut underneath and a water-soluble topper such as Madeira Avalon Film above, then hoop all layers together. If the backing will show through the weave, add a similar-coloured lining between the burlap and backing or line the whole project piece. On a very open weave, choose a more filled motif instead.

How do I keep the scrollwork visible on velvet, fleece, or terrycloth?

The method depends on the pile. Do not hoop velvet itself: hoop a cutaway backing, apply a light coat of Gunold KK100 temporary adhesive, smooth the velvet on top, then secure Madeira Avalon Film around the hoop edges. For fleece and terrycloth, hoop the fabric with cutaway backing and topping whenever the thickness allows. Floating a very thick towel on hooped backing is possible, but it is a compromise with a higher chance of fuzzy or shifted stitches. Choose low-pile towelling for this key and stitch a test first.

Why do the small and large keys use different thread charts?

The small key uses two Madeira Classic 40 colours: 1383 for the amethyst accent and 1064 for gold. The large key adds 1359 to create an additional gold shadow and more dimension. Check the chart for the size you selected before loading the file.

Can I embroider the key on a denim jacket, bag, or flap?

Yes. Denim and canvas support this detailed motif well. Preshrink cotton denim or canvas, then hoop it with a medium cutaway backing. Embroider a bag flap or garment panel before assembly. On finished jeans or a jacket, do not run the bow across a seam, zipper, or allowance thicker than 1/8 in (3 mm): the bulky area can make the scrollwork uneven. Print the template at 100%, then mark the bow centre and vertical key axis.

Is this key suitable for a T-shirt or thin knit?

The large key is not the best choice for a thin T-shirt: its dense bow and long shaft can weigh down or pucker the knit. If you embroider on knit, choose the small version, use medium cutaway backing with Gunold KK100 between the backing and fabric, and do not stretch the fabric while hooping. Test the selected size on the same knit first. A sweatshirt, stable French terry, or heavier knit is a more reliable base for this motif.

Can this key be made in another size?

Order a professional recalculation through the design resize service. Enlarging or reducing an embroidery file yourself changes stitch density, underlay, and small open spaces. If you alter the file independently, responsibility for the stitch-out result remains with you.
