Madeira Classic 40 Thread Chart

The original thread chart specifies seven Madeira Classic 40 colors. The numbers and design elements below correspond to the original color chart.

Fabric and Stabilizer Recommendations

Because this design contains broad filled areas and a high stitch count, it should be embroidered on a stable fabric. For cushions, table runners and decorative panels, use cotton, firm linen, decorative canvas or a stable blended fabric weighing approximately 180–300 g/m².

Use a medium-weight or firm cut-away stabilizer weighing approximately 70–90 g/m². Hoop the fabric and stabilizer together without stretching either layer. On lighter fabric, fuse a lightweight woven interfacing to the reverse before adding the cut-away stabilizer.

When embroidering on terry cloth or another raised surface, place water-soluble topping over the fabric. This prevents the lattice, gold dots and narrow leaves from sinking into the pile. Use a new 75/11 embroidery needle for medium fabric or an 80/12 embroidery needle for heavier canvas.

A speed of approximately 550–650 stitches per minute gives the machine better control over the large filled sections, changes in stitch direction and smaller decorative details.

Using Metallic Thread

Madeira Classic 1159 may be replaced with gold metallic embroidery thread for the lattice, decorative dots and selected outlines. Use a Metallic 80/12 or 90/14 needle, reduce the speed to approximately 400–500 stitches per minute and allow the thread to unwind through a long, unrestricted thread path.

If the metallic thread twists or breaks, place the spool on a separate thread stand. Do not spray ordinary silicone into the tension discs or directly into the machine mechanism. Use only a thread treatment approved by the thread or machine manufacturer.

Project Ideas

The smallest size can be used as a central motif on a large cushion or Christmas textile panel. The larger versions work well on wide table runners, tree skirts, chair backs, oversized fabric gift bags and wall panels.

For a clearly defined lattice pattern, choose a plain fabric that contrasts with the orange, burgundy and gold sections. When using printed fabric, position the ornament over a visually quiet area so that the checkerboard sections and small dots remain visible.

Why can the outlines shift around the filled sections?

Misregistration between the fills and outlines usually means that the fabric moved during embroidery. Use sufficiently firm cut-away stabilizer, hoop both layers together and avoid stretching the fabric. A worn needle or excessive stitching speed can make the problem worse.

What should I do if a bird’s nest forms under the fabric?

Stop the machine immediately and do not continue stitching over the thread nest. Remove the trapped thread according to the machine manual, then rethread the upper thread with the presser foot raised. Check that the bobbin is installed correctly, replace a damaged needle and inspect the complete thread path before restarting.

How can I keep the lattice pattern even?

Do not resize the embroidery file in the machine. Use stable fabric, firm cut-away support and balanced upper-thread tension. Run a complete test when changing the fabric type or replacing the gold rayon with metallic thread.

How can I change the palette without losing the details?

Maintain a clear tonal difference between neighboring sections. The light and dark checkered areas must remain distinct, while the lattice should contrast with the orange and rose-colored fills. Compare the actual thread spools directly against the project fabric before stitching.
