Fabric and stabilizer recommendations

Detailed ornate motifs generally produce the clearest results on stable woven fabrics. Suitable materials include medium-weight linen, cotton, twill, gabardine, canvas, non-stretch denim and home décor fabrics.

• Use medium-weight tear-away stabilizer for lighter motifs on stable cotton or linen.
• Use permanent cut-away stabilizer for dense designs, garments and frequently washed textiles.
• Use soft poly-mesh cut-away backing when the embroidery will touch the skin.
• Add water-soluble topping when stitching on terry cloth, velvet, fleece or deeply textured fabric.
• Prewash linen, cotton and other fabrics that may shrink.

Do not stretch the fabric in the hoop to make it appear tighter. When removed from the hoop, stretched fabric returns to its original shape and can create puckering around the embroidery.

Threads, needles and color choices

Standard 40-weight embroidery thread is suitable for most designs in this category.

• Polyester thread is recommended for towels, aprons, garments and other frequently washed projects.
• Rayon or viscose thread produces a softer, silk-like sheen for decorative napkins, cushions, curtains and framed embroidery.
• Metallic thread can be used selectively for crowns, Christmas motifs and golden ornamental accents.

A 75/11 embroidery needle is suitable for most medium-weight woven fabrics and standard 40-weight thread. Use a ballpoint or stretch needle for knitwear. When adding metallic thread, use a Metallic 90/14 needle and reduce the stitching speed.

The same ornate design can look completely different in another palette. Gold, ivory and deep jewel tones create a formal effect. Terracotta, olive, mustard and muted blue work well on natural linen. Bright coral, turquoise, lime and orange give tropical designs a modern character.
